My Long-Distance Relationship, Why I Stayed Faithful

A Long-distance relationship can reveal a lot. Loneliness can cause temptation. But why did I stay faithful? I was in love. It really was that simple.

Being in a long-distance relationship can feel like you’re dating a ghost. There’s just nothing like the warm touch of your partner, their scent, their lips, and overall presence. Talking to your partner over Facetime just isn’t the same!

But if you’re with the right partner, the challenges of a long-distance relationship should really end there.

Because the challenges should lie in missing your partner, and not fighting temptation.

“Distance unites missing beats of two hearts in love.”

-Munia Khan

If you find yourself feeling “tempted to cheat”, then consider if you’re actually in love with your partner. Because from my experience, if you are truly in love, that temptation isn’t even a factor.

When me and my boyfriend were apart for a semester in college, I had zero temptations to cheat on him. Yes, I felt lonely, but because I missed his presence. I missed him. I had no desire to fill the void of loneliness with another guy. I was so in love, that no other guy could.

So, it’s not like I had to “fight the urge to cheat”. I didn’t, because there was no such urge. While missing him was a challenge, staying faithful was really no challenge at all. And he felt the same way about me. I was never worried that he might be cheating, because I knew he was waiting for me, and no one else.

Don’t Ignore Your Feelings

  • If you have to question if your partner is cheating, then there’s a trust issue. Work on it together, or consider that you just aren’t ready for each other right now. And that’s okay.
  • Any urges to break-up, mess around, or otherwise cheat…are natural feelings. It does not make you a bad partner, or a bad person.
  • It might even be a good idea for both of you to take a break from the relationship, and see where you stand once distance is no longer a factor. You may just find that your bond is even stronger than you once thought.

Feria’s Last Call

While a long-distance relationship is not ideal, it can certainly serve as a testament for your commitment to one another. You should feel the loneliness that comes with missing your partner. It shows how much they mean to you. Just remember that not only is it temporary, but it’s also beautiful that you could be so in love with someone, it hurts when they’re away.■
